Background

Since 2001, Governor Technology has been helping businesses, charities and public bodies understand, make the most of and integrate the latest technology with their people, processes and systems.

Brief

Governor wanted to review their existing development processes to ensure they were taking full advantage of the latest software development methodologies and practices. This would enable them to continue to offer their clients an excellent level of service and remain competitive.

Approach

An initial meeting with Governor determined key requirements and a plan of work for the next few weeks. Peter would engage with the team at Governor in a variety of ways:

  • Agile refresher: A training session aimed to refresh everyone’s understanding of Agile principles. A chance to reflect on Governors development approach.
  • Value Stream mapping: A workshop with management to share common understanding of development process from requirement to delivery. An opportunity to identify areas for improvement.
  • Retrospective sessions: A weekly company retrospective meeting was scheduled to allow the development team to reflect on existing practices and generate actions when change was needed.
  • Training Sessions:The team requested sessions on User Stories, Scrum, requirements management and definition of done. This helped validate their knowledge and generated some new ideas for process improvement.
  • On going mentoring and Support: Being available and part of the team to answer questions and discuss new ideas
  • Peter delivered training or facilitated meetings weekly. This allowed the team time to reflect on new knowledge and give feedback, which enabled future sessions to be planned more closely to Governors requirements. Process change was always facilitated by Peter and actioned by the team.

Key deliverables

Deliverables were agreed at the start of the engagement and reviewed at the end. As well as working with the team and providing on going mentoring and support, two key deliverables showed progress over the 2 months Peter worked with Governor:

  • An improvement backlog: An improvement backlog was implemented which allowed Governor to plan and track process change
  • Project Policies: Project Policies express action points agreed by the team. These were developed as required and useful in recording and documenting agreements when processes are changed.

Outcomes

Governor now has regular company retrospectives which generate new ideas for process improvement.

They regularly action points on the improvement backlog and track their success.

They have put in place project policies to address stress points in their development process. They are looking forward with confidence to implementing Scrum on larger projects and the team feel empowered to contribute to the continued success of the company.
